First Communion Lessons

First Holy Communion

What is a First Communion Class?

Holy Communion (The Lord’s Supper) is one of the greatest gifts our Lord has given His Church. In it we are not given mere bread and wine but the true body and blood of our Savior Jesus. He gives us this meal “for the forgiveness of sins,” and the strengthening and nurturing of our faith. The First Communion class is intended to help prepare the hearts and minds of the students to receive this gift.

Who should participate in the First Communion Class?

Any and all ages, but especially designed for 7+ year olds/2nd graders.

How long is the class?

This class is ten-eleven (10-11) sessions in length, with accompanying worksheets each week, including a First Communion parent/student retreat. Each session runs 35-45 minutes.

What will we cover in this class?

Six Chief Parts of the Catechism

  1. Baptism

  2. Apostles’ Creed

  3. Lord’s Prayer

  4. Ten Commandments

  5. Confession

  6. Lord’s Supper

What is required to complete this class?

Memory Work:

  • Apostles’ Creed

  • Lord’s Prayer

  • 10 Commandments

    Work Sheets:

  • Weekly worksheet of 8-10 questions to be answered with the help of parents and the use of the Bible and Small Catechism.

    Resources:

What is expected of the parents?

  • Parents are called as the primary disciplers of their children. We see the First Communion class to be a way we can partner with the parents in this discipleship process. One parent is required to participate in First Communion class, help your child/children answer questions on worksheets, complete memory work, and discern their readiness to receive Baptism (if they have not already) and Holy Communion.
